LaGrange Gateway Corridor Plan
Overview: Lafayette Parkway, Hamilton Road, and Whitesville Road are the City of LaGrange’s major corridors to downtown and key connections to Interstate 85. This project analyzes the existing conditions and develops a vision plan for three corridors. The impetus for the project is a desire to enhance these as gateways into LaGrange’s resurgent downtown and to strategically and sustainably organize growth of the city for the future. This project is a logical extension of previous work on the Mission Zero Corridor and potentially would also have farther reaching influence on how we consider development along similar corridors throughout the rest of Georgia.
The Approach: The three corridors not only connected a series of catalytic sites, but they also had the the dual objective of serving regional versus local needs. Drawing from historic lessons on parkways and their often accompanying local neighborhood streets, the planning team explored the idea of treating these four corridors as two couples. Each couplet would have two components: a parkway with lush design and a neighborhood street flanked by businesses and other activities.
Example of streets couplet: Jamaicaway, Boston, MA. 1882; developed by Frederick Law Olmsted
The planning team provided community members and city officials in LaGrange with examples of couplets around the country that served similar needs and used them as the basis to make recommendations on the streetscape improvements and land use. Below are some example of the streetscape recommendations.
Streetscape Recommendations

The team then paired the streetscape proposed improvements with transportation and open space recommendations as well as land use as seen in the maps below.
Lastly, a series of catalytic sites were identified along the corridors.
